Syria’s interim authority head, Ahmed al-Sharaa, received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the People’s Palace in Damascus. The meeting was attended by ministerial delegations from both countries and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. According to a statement from the presidency, the talks focused on ways to enhance bilateral relations and economic cooperation.
The statement noted that both sides emphasized “the importance of ensuring the security of food supply chains, contributing to enhanced stability amidst international tensions.”
This visit comes one day after the Ukrainian president’s trip to Turkey, where he met with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to discuss bilateral ties, peace efforts to end the Russo-Ukrainian war, and regional and international developments.
It is worth noting that the Russian military presence in Syria saw a significant decline following the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024.
The visit to Syria is part of an active diplomatic push by Kyiv in the Middle East aimed at expanding its security partnerships. Ukraine seeks to leverage the military expertise it has accumulated during its years-long war with Russia, particularly in the fields of countering drones and missiles.
Writing on the X platform, Zelenskyy stated: “Today in Damascus, we continue our active diplomacy to achieve genuine security and economic cooperation,” signaling his country’s intent to strengthen its role in regional security matters.
