Kurdish Leader Masoud Barzani: Targeting Civilians in the Kurdistan Region Lacks Any Shred of Magnanimity or Pride

Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani has condemned the attack targeting the Kurdistan Region, describing it as an unjustified aggression that resulted in the martyrdom of civilian citizens. This comes amid a wave of official condemnations from the Regional Presidency, the Government, and the Ministry of Peshmerga, which characterized the attacks as a “war crime” and a violation of international laws.

In a message published on his official website today, Tuesday (April 7, 2026), President Masoud Barzani began with “In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,” stating:

“The unlawful aggression against the Kurdistan Region was repeated last night, unfortunately resulting in the martyrdom of two innocent citizens in the village of Zargazawi in Erbil Governorate, due to an Iranian drone attack.”

He added, “This is an act of extreme criminality and injustice, where unarmed citizens of Kurdistan are targeted in this manner without any justification, driven by blind hatred.” He noted that the martyrdom of these two innocent citizens has filled hearts with pain and sorrow, offering his condolences to the victims’ families.

In conclusion, he emphasized that “targeting civilian citizens in the Kurdistan Region and causing their martyrdom does not contain a shred of magnanimity or pride,” asserting that the will of the people of Kurdistan will always remain stronger than all attacks, aggressions, and drones, and will never be broken. He added that the people of Kurdistan rely on God and the justice of their cause.

Regional Presidency and Government Response

For his part, the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, strongly condemned the “terrorist attack” that targeted a citizen’s home in the village of Zargazawi, Erbil, resulting in the martyrdom of a married couple.

In a statement released by the Presidency this morning, he said: “I extend my deepest condolences and sympathy to the family and relatives of the two martyrs,” adding, “I share their grief from the bottom of my heart.”

He stressed that these attacks are “unacceptable in any form and completely rejected,” calling on the Iraqi Federal Government to fulfill its duties and responsibilities to prevent these crimes and terrorist attacks, and to put an end to the repeated assaults on innocent civilians.

Similarly, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, described the attack as a “war crime,” expressing profound sorrow and pain upon hearing the news of the drone strike on the home of a Peshmerga member in the Erbil outskirts, which led to his martyrdom along with his wife.

“I condemn this heinous crime in all its forms and denounce its perpetrators,” he stated, asserting that targeting civilians and their homes is a war crime. “We will convey the call of the oppressed people of Kurdistan to the entire world to end this injustice.”

Field Details and Counter-Terrorism Reports

At dawn on Tuesday, a drone fell in the village of Zargazawi in the Zirarti area, directly targeting a civilian home, which resulted in the martyrdom of Musa Zrari and his wife.

The Kurdistan Region Counter-Terrorism Group reported that the attack occurred at 00:15 on Tuesday (April 7, 2026), via a booby-trapped drone “directed from Iran” toward a citizen’s house in a village in Erbil Governorate. This led to the martyrdom of the couple, Musa Anwar Rasul and Mozhda Asaad Hassan. The group noted that these attacks are “a violation of international laws and a war crime.”

Ministry of Peshmerga Statement

In a separate statement, the Ministry of Peshmerga explained that “outlawed and rogue terrorist groups” targeted a Peshmerga headquarters within the Rapparin Administration boundaries on the night of April 6, 2026, using two booby-trapped drones.

The Ministry added that the attacks extended to target the home of Peshmerga member Musa Anwar in Erbil via three booby-trapped drones “launched from Iranian territory,” leading to his and his wife’s martyrdom.

The Ministry affirmed that these assaults “represent a dangerous escalation in the series of systematic sabotage attacks targeting Peshmerga headquarters and populated areas in the Kurdistan Region.” It emphasized that “the blood of our martyrs will not be in vain.”

Furthermore, the Ministry of Peshmerga held “the Islamic Republic of Iran and outlawed armed groups in Iraq fully and directly responsible for these bombardments,” calling on the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces to take urgent measures to put a definitive end to these attacks and aggressions.
