Family of Martyr Siban Haso Kermi Demands Investigation into Crime Circumstances and Bringing Those Responsible to Justice
Cities and towns across Hasakah Governorate witnessed angry protests on Thursday evening to condemn the killing of Hasakah Brigade fighter Siban Hizni, following his abduction by an armed group and forced transport to an area in Mount Abdulaziz in the countryside of Tal Tamr in western Kurdistan (“Rojava Kurdistan”), as calls intensified to hold those involved in the crime accountable.
According to reported information, Siban was kidnapped in Hasakah before being brutally killed. Meanwhile, the Violation Documentation Center in Northern Syria stated that, according to circulating information, the incident stems from events dating back approximately two years. At that time, Siban was working on the Al-Aliyah front to combat smuggling within the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), where a clash broke out with smugglers that resulted in the death of a member of the Al-Bakkara tribe.
According to the same information, Musa and his son, Mahmoud Al-Aref, and Issa are accused of being behind the kidnapping and killing. The reported narrative indicates that members of the Al-Bakkara tribe carried out the abduction and killing of Siban as an act of revenge nearly two years after the initial clash.
At the time, the chief of the Al-Bakkara tribe, Hajim Bashir, had intervened to hold a meeting with SDF leaders, during which it was emphasized that the matter was a security issue and that the deceased had fallen during smuggling operations. Furthermore, three members of the SDF were martyred during the clashes that took place as part of operations to halt smuggling.
Following the crime, demands escalated for the intervention of the Syrian Ministry of Defense and for holding the kidnappers and killers accountable, emphasizing that the case must not go unpunished, especially given the recurring incidents of extrajudicial abductions and killings in the Hasakah countryside.
In a statement issued by the family of the martyr Siban Haso Kermi, his brother—speaking on behalf of his martyred brothers, all martyrs of the family and tribe, and everyone who has carried the cause of freedom and dignity in Kurdistan—said: “We direct this appeal to the administration in Rojava – Kurdistan, demanding that it assume its responsibility and continue to call for accountability for everyone who committed this horrific crime against my brother, and to bring those responsible to justice.”
The statement added that the martyr “was killed in a brutal and barbaric manner,” emphasizing that the crime “cannot be forgotten or allowed to pass without accountability,” and highlighting the right of his family and the relatives of the martyrs to “know the truth, achieve justice, and obtain redress for the victims.”
The family affirmed that “crimes and threats will not intimidate us, nor will they deter us from upholding our right to freedom, dignity, and peace,” adding that “the blood of our martyrs is a trust upon our shoulders, and their memory will remain present in our conscience.”
They called on the relevant authorities in Rojava, the competent Syrian authorities, and all parties capable of exerting influence to “take serious action to uncover the circumstances of the crime and hold its perpetrators and those behind them accountable, in accordance with the law and justice.”
The family concluded its statement by saying: “Mercy, forgiveness, and peace be upon the soul of the martyr Siban Haso Kermi, and immortality to the souls of all our martyrs,” reiterating: “Long live Kurdistan, long live the Kurdish people, glory and immortality to the martyrs, and justice for everyone whose life was unjustly taken.”
For his part, the Deputy Minister of Defense for the Eastern Region, Siban Hamo, offered his condolences on the martyrdom of the Hasakah Brigade fighter following his abduction by an armed group, confirming the arrest of several individuals involved in the crime.
Concurrently, thousands of residents of Hasakah Governorate gathered to condemn the crime and demand accountability for those responsible. Kurdish areas in Rojava Kurdistan also witnessed widespread protests on Thursday evening, as hundreds of young Kurds took to the squares in the cities of Hasakah, Qamishli, and Amuda, blocking roads in protest against the murder of Siban.
This incident comes at a time when Hasakah Governorate and regions across North and East Syria are witnessing complex security issues, alongside the restructuring of security and military institutions amid the transformations taking place in Syria during 2026.
Over recent months, the Hasakah countryside has recorded abductions targeting civilians, including an incident involving the kidnapping of two Kurdish citizens in the Ras al-Ayn (Sere Kaniye) countryside, who were later released after their families paid a ransom, according to reports by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
