Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Announces Targeting of Kurdish Forces in Kurdistan Region

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Saturday that it had targeted forces belonging to Kurdish parties from Iran in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Iran’s Tasnim News Agency quoted a statement from the IRGC saying that “the shelling was carried out at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2026,” adding that “three sites belonging to anti-Iran Kurdish separatists deployed in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq were struck by missiles.” The statement warned that “if separatist groups in the region take any action against Iran’s territorial integrity, we will crush them.”

Earlier, the United States warned that fighters backed by Iran might target hotels in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq that are frequented by foreigners.

Meanwhile, the group calling itself the Iraqi resistance (Saraya Awliya al-Dam) announced on Saturday, March 7, 2026, that it had carried out “a drone attack targeting a vital objective in Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdistan Region.”

This came after the same group announced on Friday, March 6, 2026, that it had carried out “an attack with a barrage of rockets targeting the U.S. Camp Victory at Baghdad International Airport.”

Later, Donald Trump, the United States president, told Reuters in a phone interview that he supports any attack carried out by the Kurds against Iran.

“I think their desire to do so is great, and I fully support them,” he said.

When asked whether the United States would provide or had provided air support for any Kurdish attack, Donald Trump replied: “I cannot tell you that.”

Since the United States and Israel launched the war last Saturday, Iran has carried out strikes on U.S. military sites in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and on Iranian Kurdish forces stationed in the region.

On Friday, three sources familiar with talks between Israel and Iranian Kurdish armed groups told Reuters that Israel has been striking parts of western Iran to support these groups, which hope to take advantage of the U.S.–Israeli war on Tehran to seize towns near the border.

On February 22, 2026, the formation of the Coalition of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan was announced. The alliance includes six Iranian Kurdish opposition organizations, most of which operate from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, with the aim of coordinating their efforts against the Iranian regime.

The coalition includes the Kurdistan Freedom Party, the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran, the Kurdistan Free Life Party, the Kurdistan Iran Struggle Organization (Khabat), Komala of the Toilers of Kurdistan, as well as the Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan, which joined the alliance later.
