Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani has condemned the repeated attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region, asserting that they pose a direct threat to the region’s security and stability, and calling on Iraqi authorities to take a decisive stance against them.
In a statement issued on March 29, 2026, Barzani noted that “the Kurdistan Region has never been a party to the conflicts, tensions, and wars witnessed by the region.” However, he pointed out the existence of “groups of individuals—deterred by no one—who focus their entire energy on antagonizing the Kurdistan Region by various means, constantly attacking the Region and the Peshmerga forces without justification, and posing a threat to the lives and stability of the people of Kurdistan.”
He explained that over the past years, these groups have carried out dozens of attacks “unjustly, aggressively, and without any provocation” using drones and missiles, resulting in civilian casualties. He added: “Since the beginning of this war, they have launched more than 450 attacks with missiles and drones against the Kurdistan Region and the headquarters of the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces.”
Barzani further noted that his own residence has also been subjected to repeated strikes, stating: “During this period, they attacked our headquarters five times, but we remained silent to avoid inciting concern and anger among the public. Yesterday, they attacked the residence of the President of the Region in the city of Duhok with a drone.” He emphasized that “the matter is not about the house or headquarters of a specific individual; every inch of Kurdistan and all the homes of the people of Kurdistan are of great value to us.”
Barzani asserted that these attacks represent “explicit hostility, great injustice, and a flagrant violation against the Kurdistan Region,” calling for a “serious and decisive” end to them. He added that addressing these assaults “cannot be resolved through statements of condemnation, phone calls, telegrams, or committees,” but rather requires the Iraqi authorities to finalize their position.
He stressed: “The Iraqi authorities must make a decision: either declare their inability to restrain these outlaw groups, or intervene seriously to protect the state and take firm measures to prevent the recurrence of these blatant attacks on the Kurdistan Region.”
Concluding his statement, he affirmed that “the people of Kurdistan will defend their peaceful message and just cause with a will of steel, and no threat, assault, or enemy has been or will ever be able to break this will.”
