The Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), General Mazloum Abdi, met with a committee representing the families of prisoners and missing persons, stressing that the issue of prisoners and the missing in the recent battles represents a central matter within the integration process in accordance with the January 29 agreement, given its direct and positive impact on the course of its implementation.
Abdi explained, according to a statement by the SDF, that he had been officially informed of the presence of 1,070 prisoners in Syrian prisons, including both civilians and military personnel, stressing that this file is receiving the highest priority in terms of follow-up and action, and that it cannot be subject to bargaining under any circumstances.
He added that efforts are continuing intensively to address the issue according to a specific timetable, noting that prisoners will be returned to their families in the coming period. He also pointed out that a number of prisoners from both sides had been released in recent days as part of practical steps aimed at addressing the issue.
The SDF Commander-in-Chief stressed that the prisoner file represents a fundamental commitment within the agreement, noting that the Syrian president had confirmed this commitment and the importance of implementing it when the agreement was signed. At the same time, he pointed to the continuation of a plan to release detainees held in prisons in north and east Syria as part of a rehabilitation program and a process aimed at clearing the prisons.
According to the statement, the SDF Commander-in-Chief also “affirmed the heroic role of the captured fighters,” emphasizing that their sacrifices and perseverance in the battles were a central factor in protecting the population, while stressing the importance of their return to their families to resume their lives and contribute to building a safe future.
