The Co-Chair of the Department of Foreign Relations in the Autonomous Administration, Ilham Ahmed, confirmed the existence of ongoing diplomatic activity between Rojava and Damascus, pointing out that the Kurdish issue, along with the file of Kurdish rights and language, constitutes main axes in the ongoing discussions with the government in Damascus.
Speaking to Ronahi TV, Ilham Ahmed stated that the recent meeting with Ziyad al-Ayesh “was planned in advance,” explaining that the education file was among the most prominent axes of discussion during the meeting.
Regarding the return of displaced persons, Ahmed stressed that “it is time for all displaced people to return to their homes,” emphasizing that “attacking the displaced is rejected and unacceptable.” She added: “Regardless of the circumstances, attacks on state institutions cannot be justified or accepted,” considering that “parties rejecting integration are behind these attacks.”
She pointed out that the Autonomous Administration “made direct contacts with Damascus regarding the recent events,” stressing that the issue of integrating Kurds into state institutions “is subject to deliberate distortion” and that it “is heading toward an actual partnership in the state.” She stated that what matters to the administration is “guaranteeing the rights and gains of the Kurds in the new Syria.”
Regarding the Kurdish language, Ahmed stated that “the Kurdish language file has reached a stage where Damascus must recognize and accept it,” emphasizing that “integration cannot be completed without resolving the Kurdish language issue,” and stressing that “Kurds must not be put at risk under any nationalist pretext.”
She affirmed that “the Kurdish issue is the pivotal and primary subject of discussion with Damascus,” noting that the government in Damascus “has a narrow view regarding the role and status of women,” while clarifying that “the post-administrative arrangements for Hasakah Governorate” have not yet been completed.
Concerning her role in the upcoming phase, Ahmed said: “I will continue to serve society regardless of the position or title I hold.”
On regional affairs, Ahmed noted that Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan “played a primary role in achieving a ceasefire in the region,” considering that “ending the armed conflict constitutes a starting point toward a political solution.” She added that “the Peace and Democratic Society Process launched by leader Öcalan has a direct impact on the region,” pointing out that they “tried to communicate with leader Öcalan and meet him during the recent attacks on our regions.”
Ahmed concluded her remarks by stressing the need to view Syria as a homeland for all its components, stating: “We must see Syria as a homeland and a state for us, and work for its future.”
