Local sources: Traces of torture appeared on the body of Louay Mohammad Zharouf after it was handed over to his family and buried in the Jableh countryside
The death of detainee Louay Mohammad Zharouf inside the prisons of the Syrian Interim Authority was announced in the countryside of Jableh, Latakia Governorate, approximately three months after his arrest in Damascus, amid local reports indicating that traces of torture appeared on his body after it was handed over to his family.
According to local sources, Zharouf was arrested in May 2026 due to his volunteering with the “National Defence Forces” in Damascus. He remained detained for about three months before his death inside the detention facility was announced on August 22, 2026.
Sources reported the presence of torture marks on his body upon delivery to his family. He was buried on the same day, August 22, 2026, in the town of Ras al-Ain in the Jableh countryside, Latakia Governorate.
According to circulating information, Louay Mohammad Zharouf was not subjected to any trial to verify the allegations against him during his detention; rather, he died inside the prison facility.
Zharouf’s death comes at a time of increasing reports regarding deaths inside detention centers affiliated with the Syrian Transitional Government. Previous instances of death in custody have similarly raised controversy regarding detention conditions and the treatment of detainees, amid calls from human rights organizations for urgent, transparent investigations into torture allegations and holding those responsible accountable.
The death of Zharouf, according to available data, brings renewed focus to detention conditions and the fate of detainees who are held without trial to verify the charges brought against them.
