Arbitrary Arrest Campaign Targets Kurdish Civilians in Raqqa on Fabricated Charges

The “Criminal Security” forces affiliated with the transitional government carried out a campaign of raids and arbitrary arrests targeting a number of Kurdish civilians in the city of Raqqa, under the direct supervision of security leadership in the area, amid growing concerns over escalating systematic violations against displaced persons.

Activists from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the campaign focused on the “Kurdish Neighborhood” and the surroundings of the Silos area and behind the railway line, where two young men were arrested yesterday and another today. All of them are from the city of Tal Abyad and had previously been displaced to Raqqa during earlier periods.

These arrests come against the backdrop of fabricated charges, in what appears to be an attempt to undermine understandings related to the file of the safe return of displaced persons to their homes. The security pursuits also targeted entire families and currency exchange shop owners from Tal Abyad residing in the city, prompting some of them to flee out of fear of arrest.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights condemned these practices that target civilians on ethnic grounds or through unlawful accusations, calling on the local authorities in Raqqa to halt security harassment campaigns, release those arbitrarily detained, and ensure the protection of the rights of internally displaced persons and the forcibly displaced in accordance with international conventions, away from the political and military tensions in the region.
