The Democratic Syria Council (SDC) issued a statement addressing the recent agreement between the Syrian Interim Government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), considering it a step within a complex political process aimed at ending escalation, preventing a slide into further chaos, and creating the conditions for a new political phase that requires addressing the root causes of the conflict rather than merely managing its consequences.
The Council emphasized that the assessment of any political or security understandings must be based on the extent of their practical commitment to protecting civilians, guaranteeing Syrians’ civil and political rights, ensuring the safe and dignified return of displaced persons, and preserving social peace and community stability.
The statement explained that the Council’s approach to these developments is consistent with its long-standing commitment to dialogue and peaceful solutions, as well as its awareness of the profound transformations taking place in Syria and the region. These changes necessitate a responsible transition from a logic of managing territory and conflict to one of national political action and the building of broad Syrian consensus. The Council stressed that its support for any negotiation process comes within its role as a democratic political force seeking to prevent the return of authoritarianism and to reject the reproduction of the causes of the crisis.
In this context, the Democratic Syria Council strongly condemned the resort to violence and military confrontation as a means of managing political disputes. It noted that the military escalation witnessed in the Syrian coastal regions and in Suwayda, followed by northern and eastern Syria, and then by partial and temporary agreements, reflects an evasion of the fundamental responsibility of ensuring the success of the transitional phase and building a comprehensive national path toward a political solution.
The Council stressed that the current stage requires rebuilding trust among the components of the Syrian people, preventing sectarian strife, strengthening Arab-Kurdish partnership, and consolidating the role of civil and political forces as the true guarantors of the country’s unity and stability, away from the logic of dominance or exclusion. It also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining its national and international relations that support stability, counterterrorism, and the protection of rights and freedoms, within the framework of respect for Syrian sovereignty and the will of its people.
The Democratic Syria Council concluded its statement by reaffirming its determination to continue working in accordance with its national political program and to assume its historical responsibilities, stemming from its conviction that what Syria is experiencing today represents a pivotal moment that requires all democratic forces to reorganize their roles and to defend Syrians’ aspirations for freedom, dignity, justice, and democracy.
