French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed on Thursday, 12 February 2026, the necessity of granting the Kurds a fundamental role in the administration of the Syrian government, stressing the importance of implementing the agreement reached between Ahmed al-Sharaa (al-Jolani) and Syrian Democratic Forces Commander Mazloum Abdi, and integrating the “SDF” into the structure of the Syrian army.
In an exclusive statement to Kurdistan 24 correspondent Barzan Hassan, Macron said: “The Kurds must have an active role in the administration of the Syrian government, and it is essential to move forward with implementing the understandings between Ahmed al-Sharaa and Mazloum Abdi, leading to the integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces into the ranks of the Syrian army.”
The French president also pointed to his ongoing communication with Mazloum Abdi, stating: “We have held talks with Mr. Mazloum Abdi several times, and we have done good work for the areas of Northeast Syria (Rojava). The continuation of the ceasefire between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the government represents a fundamental pillar for the stability and security of the region.”
Macron praised the heroic role of Kurdish fighters, expressing his gratitude by saying: “The heroic sons and daughters of the Kurds fought terrorism on behalf of the entire world, and we will certainly not forget the sacrifices made by the Syrian Democratic Forces in this regard.”
In conclusion, the French president affirmed that his country is closely monitoring the situation in Syria, reiterating Paris’s full support for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
