The Serê Kaniyê/Ras al-Ain/Rêş Ayno Displaced Persons Committee announced today, March 15, 2026, a state of emergency in the Serê Kaniyê, Washokani, and Newroz camps in Al-Hasakah, northern Syria, due to heavy rainfall and flooding sweeping across the region and the increasing risks they pose to the lives of thousands of displaced people residing in these camps.
The statement indicated that the committee has raised the level of coordination and communication with all official bodies within the administration and the governorate, in addition to humanitarian organizations operating in the area, in order to accelerate the humanitarian response and take urgent measures to rescue the displaced and alleviate their suffering.
The statement explained that the humanitarian situation inside the camps is becoming increasingly difficult amid ongoing service and environmental challenges. Displaced families are facing multiple risks, in addition to a severe shortage of basic services and the worsening impact of harsh weather conditions that are increasing the suffering of residents.
According to the statement, the committee stressed the need for joint efforts between official institutions and humanitarian organizations to ensure the provision of urgent support and to secure the basic needs of the displaced, including safe shelter, health services, clean drinking water, and food supplies.
The statement also noted that the committee renewed its call on all relevant parties to act swiftly and take practical measures to reduce potential risks, and to develop and implement emergency plans that ensure the protection of civilians and alleviate their suffering, in light of the continuing difficult humanitarian conditions that the displaced have been experiencing for years.
The statement added that the Serê Kaniyê, Washokani, and Newroz camps host thousands of families displaced from the city of Serê Kaniyê/Ras al-Ain and its surrounding areas, with most residents relying heavily on humanitarian assistance provided by local and international organizations.
