Joint Statement Warns of Escalating Violence and Humanitarian Crisis in Northeast Syria
A coalition of Syrian and international civil society organizations has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating humanitarian and security situation in northeast Syria following a ceasefire and integration agreement signed on the 21st of this month between the Syrian Transitional Government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The organizations report a sharp escalation in violence in Aleppo and several areas of northern and eastern Syria, accompanied by mass displacement and serious violations of international law by all parties. According to the United Nations, more than 134,000 people have been displaced in a short period, seeking refuge in cities including Qamishli, Amuda, Malikiya/Dêrik, and Kobani, where many face severe shortages of shelter, food, and humanitarian aid amid harsh weather conditions.
The statement calls for an independent and impartial investigation into alleged violations, accountability for perpetrators, the protection of civilians, the restoration of basic services, and the opening of safe humanitarian corridors. It also stresses the need to combat hate speech, ensure media access, protect detainees’ rights, and build trust through dialogue, legal guarantees, and concrete measures—particularly regarding Kurdish rights.
The signatories urged both parties to uphold their legal obligations, prioritize civilian protection, and ensure that the agreement marks a genuine turning point away from violence toward dialogue, accountability, and respect for the rights and dignity of all Syrians.
