The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, welcomed the agreement reached between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to halt the fighting, expressing his support for the steps included in the agreement—particularly the integration of military and administrative institutions, the guarantee of the civil and educational rights of the Kurdish people, and the return of refugees to their homes.
Barzani said: “We welcome and support the agreement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces to stop the fighting, integrate military and administrative institutions, guarantee the civil and educational rights of the Kurdish people, and ensure the return of refugees to their homes.”
He described the agreement as “an important and correct step toward a peaceful solution and an end to the conflict,” stressing that “dialogue, understanding, and political solutions are the only way to reach a lasting solution that serves the interests of all parties.”
Barzani added that the agreement would provide “a solid foundation for stability, social peace, and peaceful coexistence among communities,” expressing hope that it would lead to “the reconstruction of a unified Syria, the protection of the rights of the Kurdish people and all communities in the future constitution, and the achievement of peace in Syria and the region as a whole.”
Earlier today, Friday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that they had reached a comprehensive agreement with the Syrian government to halt the exchange of fire between the two sides and to launch a phased process for integrating military forces and administrative institutions in northern and eastern Syria.
According to the text of the agreement, military forces will withdraw from contact lines, while security forces affiliated with the Syrian Ministry of Interior will enter the centers of the cities of Hasakah and Qamishli, alongside the start of a process to integrate security forces in the region. The agreement also provides for the formation of a military division comprising three brigades from the SDF, in addition to the establishment of a special Kobani brigade within a division affiliated with Aleppo Governorate.
The agreement further includes the integration of the Autonomous Administration’s institutions into Syrian state institutions, formalization of civilian employees, the settlement of the civil and educational rights of the Kurdish people, and guarantees for the return of displaced persons to their areas.
In a statement issued on January 30, 2026, the SDF Media Center confirmed that the agreement aims to unify Syrian territory and achieve full integration in the region by enhancing cooperation among the concerned parties and unifying efforts to achieve stability.
In a related development, Ilham Ahmed, Co-Chair of the Department of Foreign Relations of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, said in a statement posted on the “X” platform that the Autonomous Administration expresses its deep gratitude to the mediating countries and parties—foremost among them the United States of America and France—for their role in exerting intensive efforts to reach this agreement.
