Nour al-Din Issa Ahmad Assumes Office as Governor of Hasakah as the First Kurd to Hold the Post Amid Popular reception

Nour al-Din Issa Ahmad, known as Abu Omar Khanika, arrived in Hasakah Governorate in northeastern Syria (Rojava) to assume his duties as governor, becoming the first Kurd to be appointed to this position. He was welcomed with a large and warm reception by local residents.

Upon his arrival, the governor delivered a speech in which he thanked the people, extended greetings to fighters on the battlefronts and to the families of martyrs, and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded. He stressed that this moment represents a historic victory in the struggle of the Kurdish people, who have resisted for 14 years, emphasizing that the coming phase requires unity, the strengthening of solidarity among all components, and joint efforts to consolidate security and stability and to build institutions that serve the aspirations of citizens.

Nour al-Din Issa Ahmad, known as Abu Omar Khanika, was appointed as Governor of Hasakah in accordance with the agreement concluded between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the interim authority in Damascus.

Who is Nour al-Din Issa Ahmad?

Nour al-Din Ahmad was born in the city of Qamishlo in 1969. He holds a diploma in mechanical and electrical engineering from Damascus University. Since 1993, he worked as an engineer at the Directorate of Wired and Wireless Communications in Hasakah and Qamishlo until 2012, when he was dismissed from his job following the outbreak of the Syrian revolution due to his participation in protests against the Baathist regime, which led to his security persecution by regime agencies.

Thereafter, Ahmad became involved in military work and the defense of the region, rising through the ranks until he assumed responsibility for public relations in the Syrian Democratic Forces after their establishment in October 2015. He was also a member of the forces’ General Command.
