HASAKAH — Displaced persons (IDPs) from Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ayn), alongside a number of activists, staged a peaceful sit-in on Sunday in front of the Hasakah Governorate building in Western Kurdistan “Rojava.” The protestors demanded action on the file of their repatriation and the acceleration of establishing the necessary conditions for their safe and dignified return. The demonstration saw the participation of dozens of displaced individuals, notables, as well as social, cultural, and political figures.

The participants gathered in front of the governorate building, raising slogans asserting their right to return to their city, and chanting slogans calling for an end to the displacement file and the creation of conditions that guarantee their return to their areas of origin.

The protestors held up banners reading:

“Every child has the right to live in their home, not in a camp”

“The right of return must not be marginalized”

“Return is a demand and a human right”

“Enough forced displacement”

“We are not the children of tents… We are the children of Sere Kaniye and we demand our right to return”

The protestors called on the relevant authorities to find a radical solution to the displacement file, take urgent and practical steps to remove the obstacles hindering their return, and put an end to what they described as procrastination and delay in implementing return procedures.

During the stand, the Governor of Hasakah, Nour al-Din Ahmed, met with the protestors and listened to their demands, which focused on the need to expedite the implementation of their return process and bring this humanitarian file to a close.

The Governor emphasized that the governorate is working, in coordination with the relevant authorities, to create the appropriate conditions and achieve a safe return for the people of Sere Kaniye. He added that efforts are being made to overcome the obstacles preventing the completion of this file, stressing that work will continue to reach solutions that guarantee the return of the residents as soon as possible.

Furthermore, Nour al-Din Ahmed promised to exert all possible efforts to return all displaced persons to their homes and cities, reaffirming that work on this file will continue until their suffering is ended and their safe return is secured.

For its part, the Sere Kaniye/Ras al-Ayn IDP Committee stated in a press release that the protest was organized to demand the acceleration of preparing the necessary conditions for the residents’ return to their city and to end the delay in executing return procedures. The committee underscored that these actions come within the framework of ongoing demands for the right to a safe and dignified return, in accordance with the necessary guarantees.
