Around 400 families in the first batch.. Sere Kaniye Displaced Persons Committee confirms return marks the start of a comprehensive and organized process
Following years of forced displacement and the accompanying humanitarian, social, and economic suffering, the first convoy of displaced people from Sere Kaniye / Ras al-Ain set off today, August 10, 2026, from the town of Twaina, affiliated with the city of Hasakah, heading toward the city and its countryside. This step marks the beginning of the gradual return phase for the displaced to their homes.
The first batch includes around 400 families from the inhabitants of Sere Kaniye and its countryside. While the convoy was originally scheduled to include 647 families, certain logistical challenges prevented all families from participating.
The Sere Kaniye / Ras al-Ain Displaced Persons Committee stated in a statement that the first convoy “is heading toward the city and its surrounding countryside,” considering this step as coming after years of forced displacement and continuous efforts made by the committee with the relevant authorities.
The committee added that the departure of the first convoy “represents an important milestone in a long path of struggle and effort for voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable return to the homeland.” According to the statement, it reflects “our people’s adherence to their right to their land, homes, properties, and their right to live in safety and dignity.”
The committee emphasized that the issue of return “is not merely a geographical relocation,” but rather “an inherent right that is legally and humanitarianly legitimate.” It noted that return is linked to establishing the security, administrative, service, and humanitarian conditions that guarantee a stable return, protect the rights of returnees, and safeguard their properties.
On this occasion, the Sere Kaniye / Ras al-Ain Displaced Persons Committee reaffirmed its continued efforts to complete the return of all displaced persons from Sere Kaniye / Ras al-Ain, through an organized and gradual mechanism, alongside the necessity of providing the necessary security, legal, and administrative guarantees for a safe, dignified, and sustainable return.
It also stressed the protection of property, housing, and land rights, ensuring they are not violated or their legal status altered, in addition to providing essential services and the basic infrastructure required for the stability of returnees.
Furthermore, the committee affirmed ongoing coordination with relevant authorities, as well as humanitarian and human rights organizations, to meet the needs of returnees. It considered the return of the first batch to be “the beginning of a comprehensive return process and not the end of the file,” with continued monitoring of the conditions of all displaced persons “until the last family returns to its home.”
The committee declared: “We in the Sere Kaniye / Ras al-Ain Displaced Persons Committee, while welcoming the departure of the first convoy, salute the resilience of our people throughout the years of displacement, and confirm that the return to Sere Kaniye is not a dream, but a right, a determination, and a course of action.”
It called on all displaced members of its people to “demonstrate responsibility, cooperation, and adherence to the approved organizational mechanisms,” in order to ensure the success of the return phase and the achievement of its objectives.
The Sere Kaniye / Ras al-Ain Displaced Persons Committee concluded its statement by reiterating its commitment to continue working toward the return of all displaced persons to their homes.
