Damascus announced on Tuesday the appointment of the commander of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), Sipan Hamo, as Deputy to the Syrian Minister of Defense for the eastern region.
The Director of the Media and Communication Department at the Ministry of Defense, Asim Ghalyoun, told official media that “Sipan Hamo has been appointed as Deputy to the Minister of Defense for the eastern region in the Syrian Arab Republic.”
The media center of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) also announced in a statement that “Sipan Hamo, a member of the General Command of the Syrian Democratic Forces, has officially begun his duties as Deputy to the Syrian Minister of Defense for the eastern region, in a step that confirms the commitment of all Syrian parties to support security and stability in the region.”
It added that “this appointment comes within the framework of implementing the provisions of the January 29 agreement and reflects joint efforts to address security challenges, combat terrorism, and facilitate reconstruction and sustainable development, while ensuring the protection of the interests of all Syrians and strengthening national cooperation at the level of the higher military leadership.”
Hamo, who hails from the Afrin region, played a key role in the negotiations with Damascus, which after weeks of military escalation led to the signing of an agreement in January stipulating the gradual integration of the civil and military institutions of the Autonomous Administration within the framework of the Syrian state.
On February 22, 2026, the Syrian presidency announced that the country’s transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, had appointed Brigadier General Ziad al-Ayesh as a presidential envoy to implement the January 29 agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and achieve integration.
The Syrian government headed by al-Sharaa announced on January 29 that it had reached an agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces on a ceasefire as part of a comprehensive agreement, with an understanding on a sequential process to integrate the military and administrative forces between the two sides. The agreement also stipulates the entry of security forces into the centers of the cities of Hasakah and Qamishli, and the transfer of all civil and governmental institutions, crossings, and border points to the state.
The agreement also included the withdrawal of military forces and the formation of a military division comprising three brigades from the SDF in Hasakah province, in addition to the formation of a brigade from the Kobani (Ain al-Arab) forces within a division affiliated with Aleppo province.
