The General Command of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) issued a statement regarding reports of the death of the young man, Alaa Al-Amin. It said that “immediately after the incident occurred, a high-level investigative committee was formed, comprising a group of specialists, legal experts, and observers, to examine all the details of the incident and determine the precise circumstances surrounding the death.”
The Asayish command confirmed that it will commit to “publishing the results of the investigation with full transparency and clarity once it is completed, while stressing that anyone proven to be involved in any negligence or violation of the applicable laws and regulations will be held accountable.”
It added: “Our primary duty has always been, and will remain, to protect society and ensure fair handling of all cases, and we will not hesitate to take the necessary measures to uphold these principles.”
Yesterday, Monday, the human rights platform Rights Monitor reported that the young man, Alaa al-Din Adnan Al-Amin, died after months of enforced disappearance following his arrest by Asayish forces in the city of Qamishli in northern Syria, in an incident that sparked widespread shock and anger among residents, along with calls for an independent investigation and for those responsible to be held accountable.
Alaa al-Din Adnan Al-Amin, a Syrian-Swedish citizen from the city of Qamishli, had returned to his hometown several months before the incident after years of living abroad, with the aim of completing his wedding ceremony and celebrating the occasion among his family members and friends. However, this short period— which he had hoped would mark the beginning of a new life—turned into a tragedy. Information indicates that he was arrested by Asayish forces only about one month after his marriage, without any explanation of the reasons for his arrest or the filing of any official charges against him.
Since the moment of his arrest, all news about him ceased completely, as he was subjected to nearly six months of enforced disappearance. During this period, his family received no official information regarding his place of detention or his health or legal status, despite their repeated attempts to learn his fate.
On the morning of March 8, 2026, the young man’s family received a phone call asking them to come and receive his body, without any explanation of the circumstances of his death.
According to the family’s statements, the body was in an advanced state of decomposition when it was handed over. Clear signs of torture were also observed on the body, including bruises in different parts of the body, a broken nose, and injuries to the head. According to preliminary assessments, these indications suggest that the victim may have been subjected to torture before his death, and it is also believed that he may have died about two months before the body was handed over.
The incident has sparked widespread anger and resentment among residents of the city of Qamishli, as activists and local community figures have called for the full circumstances of the death to be revealed and for a transparent and independent investigation to be opened in order to determine those responsible for the arrest, the enforced disappearance, and what the victim endured during his period of detention.
