Departure of a Convoy Carrying Around 400 Displaced Afrin Families from Al-Hasakah to Afrin

On Monday morning, March 9, 2026, a convoy carrying around 400 Kurdish families displaced from Afrin set off from the city of Al-Hasakah toward the Afrin region in Rojava (northern Syria), as part of the implementation of the provisions of the January 29 agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the interim authorities in Syria.

Yesterday, Sunday, the Governor of Al-Hasakah, Engineer Nour al-Din Ahmed, met with the presidential delegation tasked with following up on the file of the displaced. The delegation discussed the issue of returning the displaced, and it was approved to dispatch the first convoy consisting of 400 families from the Afrin region on Monday under security protection.

On March 18, 2018, Turkey and factions affiliated with it took control of the Afrin region, which, according to human rights organizations, led to the displacement of around 400,000 Kurds from their original areas. A large number of them were displaced to the cities of the Jazira region, and many of the displaced experienced multiple waves of displacement as a result of the military operations later launched by Turkey and its affiliated factions against Kurdish forces in the region.

It is worth noting that since 2018, the Afrin region has witnessed a series of violations against the Kurdish population, including killings, kidnappings, and torture, in addition to the imposition of financial levies and restrictions on freedom of expression and cultural identity by Syrian military factions affiliated with Turkey.

Mahmoud Khalil, Deputy Commander of the Internal Security Forces in Al-Hasakah, told the media today that work is underway to open a security crossing toward Afrin within three days to facilitate the return of the remaining displaced people, with efforts being made to return all the displaced to their areas before the arrival of the Nowruz holiday on March 21.
