Death of Kurdish Poet Ahmed Husseini in Stockholm

The Kurdish poet Ahmed Husseini passed away today in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, after a three-year struggle with lung cancer.

Ahmed Husseini was a Kurdish poet and journalist. He was born in the city of Amuda in 1955 and received his primary, intermediate, and secondary education in Amuda’s schools. He later moved to Damascus to study philosophy at Damascus University, from which he graduated.

In the 1970s, he moved with his father, Sheikh Tawfiq, to the Lebanese capital Beirut, where he became acquainted with the prominent Kurdish poet Cigerxwîn and was influenced by him.

The Baathist regime prevented Ahmed Husseini from working in the field of his university degree, forcing him to take up jobs that did not match his qualifications. As a result, Husseini, like many Kurdish youths, turned toward Europe, and in 1989 he settled in Sweden.

Husseini participated in founding the Union of Intellectuals of Rojava Kurdistan (HRRK) in Europe in 2004. When the union held its second conference in 2016 in Rojava, poet Ahmed Husseini took part in it. Since then, he settled in Rojava, where he worked in the service of Kurdish culture and participated in organizing dozens of events.

Poet Ahmed Husseini authored a number of poetry collections in the Kurdish language, in addition to books he translated into Kurdish, including:

Mistek ji şîna bêcir — Stockholm, 1990.

Bi xewna we pênûsê dilorînim — Stockholm, 1993.

Rono û sirûdên bêrîkirinê — Stockholm, 1994.

Sîriskên hesinî — The Iron Grasshopper (by Salim Barakat), translation — Stockholm, 1997.

Diwan (Complete Works) — Istanbul, 2002, Avesta Publications.

Bajarê Dirinde — 2003, Belkî Publications.

Çend Dîmenên Xemgîn ên Kurmanciya Nivîskî — 2004, Aram Publications.

The Union of Intellectuals of Rojava Kurdistan mourned the passing of the Kurdish literary figure and the union’s president, poet Ahmed Husseini. It said: “On behalf of the Union of Intellectuals of Rojava Kurdistan, represented by the administrative body and all members of the union, we extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and his relatives, asking the Almighty to grant them patience and to envelop him in His vast mercy.”

The union confirmed that Kurdish poet Ahmed Husseini passed away today, Tuesday, in Sweden at the age of 71, following lung cancer.

The number of his printed books reached 15, in addition to his translation of the novel The Iron Grasshopper by Salim Barakat into Kurdish. None of his works written after 2015 have yet been printed.

He returned intermittently to Qamishli in 2013, and then settled there permanently in 2016.

He discovered that he had the illness in 2023, which forced him to travel again to Sweden to receive treatment.
