The General Command of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) in Al-Hasakah governorate issued a statement today regarding the arrest of the individual involved in an assault on Kurdish symbols in Qamishlo, identified as Hussein Al-Hassu.
The Command’s statement read: “In affirmation of our commitment to protecting civil peace and safeguarding societal symbols and gains, we announce to the public that our forces have succeeded in arresting Hussein Al-Hassu, following his involvement in acts of aggression against Kurdish symbols in the city of Qamishlo.”
“Immediately upon locating the suspect and monitoring his movements, close coordination was established with the relevant agencies of the General Security affiliated with the Syrian Interim Government. Based on a precise security operation supported by intelligence, a raid was conducted at his location, leading to his arrest at 3:00 AM today.”
“Preliminary investigations and the information available to us indicate that the primary motive behind these acts of vandalism was a desperate attempt to destabilize the region, sow discord, and create confusion among the components of the area that enjoys peaceful coexistence.”
“We confirm that the detainee will undergo a deep and comprehensive investigation to uncover all circumstances of the case, in preparation for bringing him to justice to receive his fair punishment in accordance with established rules and applicable laws. We also note that the General Security Directorate will issue a subsequent statement containing further details regarding the progress of the investigation.”
“We, in the General Command of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish), renew our pledge to our people that we will hold accountable everyone who harms the security and safety of our people.”
According to the “Rights Monitor” platform, the city of Qamishli (Qamishlo) in northeastern Syria is witnessing widespread public anger among Kurdish residents following the circulation of a video clip documenting a shooting incident targeting a Kurdish flag in a public space, amid growing fears of the incident’s repercussions on civil peace and the fragile stability in the region.
According to available information, the video clip shows a person identified as Hussein Al-Hassu randomly firing shots toward a raised Kurdish flag and a sign bearing the name of the city “Qamishlo” in the Kurdish language. This occurred on the M4 international highway, specifically at the “Zouri Roundabout,” while he was passing through the area returning to his village, Al-Amiriya, located near the Qamishli International Airport.
The footage showed that the incident took place during active traffic at the site, with civilian cars and a fuel tanker appearing near the location, which sparked panic among civilians and raised serious concerns about the potential for casualties due to the random shooting in a populated area.
It is noted that the individual in question, Hussein Al-Hassu, descends from the “Al-Rashid” tribes. Information circulating suggests that he was previously a loyalist to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, before shifting his allegiance to the new Syrian authority led by “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham,” according to Rights Monitor.
