Graham: Congress Ready to Protect the Kurds and Prevent a “Bloodbath” in Northeast Syria

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham has affirmed that the United States is making intensive efforts to maintain stability in Syria and prevent a new wave of violence, warning of the serious risks facing the Kurds in northeastern Syria and stressing that Congress stands ready to act in their defense.

In a series of posts on the platform X, Graham said he recently spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, expressing his appreciation for their efforts to bring stability to Syria and noting that the Trump administration’s actions appear to be paying off, at least in the near term.

The Republican senator emphasized that the U.S. administration is actively engaged in the Syrian file, aiming to replace chaos with stability, and called on regional partners to reinforce President Trump’s message that stability—not fighting—must be the priority. He also praised Secretary Rubio’s hands-on role in these efforts.

Graham warned that neither the region nor the world can afford another “bloodbath” in northeast Syria, stressing that the Kurds are under direct threat from the new Syrian government aligned with Turkey. He added that abandoning the Kurds—America’s chief allies in the fight against ISIS—would be disastrous for U.S. credibility and national security interests.

In this context, Graham announced that he will introduce new legislation known as the “Save the Kurds Act,” designed to impose crippling sanctions on any government or group engaged in hostilities against the Kurds. He noted that the proposed bill is expected to receive strong bipartisan support in Congress.

The senator also addressed Saudi Arabia directly, urging the Kingdom to use its influence over the Syrian government to help protect the Kurds and prevent the region from descending further into chaos. He said Saudi Arabia is uniquely positioned to play a constructive role and expressed hope that it will exercise this influence for the benefit of regional stability.

In another post, Graham reflected on past U.S. experiences, describing the abandonment of allies as a grave historical mistake. He argued that turning away from partners such as the Kurds would represent a far greater failure, and voiced confidence that President Trump would make the right decision by standing with those who stood with America and sacrificed for their shared cause.
