Kurdistan Region Leaders Welcome the Ceasefire Agreement Between the SDF and the Syrian Government

Leaders of the Kurdistan Region welcomed the agreement concluded between the Syrian interim government led by Ahmad al-Sharaa (al-Jolani) and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to halt the fighting, considering it an important step toward consolidating stability and opening a comprehensive political process in Syria.

Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, in a statement issued on Friday (30 January 2026), expressed his welcome for the agreement, stating:

“We welcome the agreement concluded between the Syrian government and the SDF. While congratulating both parties, we express our hope that the agreement will be lasting and successful.”

Barzani affirmed his belief that “dialogue and peace are the correct path to addressing problems and disputes,” expressing his hope that “the page of suffering and pain of the Kurdish people in Syria will be turned, and that everyone will enjoy peace, freedom, and stability.”

In the same context, the office of President Masoud Barzani announced that a phone call took place on Friday between him and the U.S. Special Envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack.

The statement said that Barrack conveyed, on his own behalf and on behalf of the President of the United States of America, his thanks and special greetings to Barzani, in appreciation of his role in supporting the ceasefire and promoting dialogue between the Syrian government and the SDF, commending his efforts in reaching the agreement.

For his part, President Barzani expressed his thanks to the President of the United States and to all parties that contributed to resolving differences through dialogue, reaffirming his welcome for the 30 January 2026 agreement “in the interest of consolidating peace.”

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani also issued a statement welcoming the agreement, affirming his support for halting the fighting, integrating military and administrative institutions, guaranteeing the civil and educational rights of the Kurdish people, and ensuring the return of refugees to their homes.

He said the agreement “represents an important and correct step toward a peaceful solution and ending the conflict,” stressing that dialogue and political solutions are the only way to reach a lasting settlement that serves all parties and lays the foundation for stability, social peace, and the rebuilding of a unified Syria.

In turn, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani welcomed the agreement, describing it as “a step toward expanding understanding and consolidating stability, particularly in Kurdish areas.”

In a statement on Friday (30 January 2026), he said:

“We welcome the agreement signed between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and we hope it will constitute a first step toward consolidating peace, freedom, stability, and development throughout Syria.”

Masrour Barzani praised the role of President Masoud Barzani in de-escalating tensions, also commending the support of the United States and its administration, as well as friendly countries, for efforts aimed at ending tensions.

For his part, Kurdistan Democratic Union (PUK) President Bafel Talabani welcomed the agreement, expressing his hope that it would be “a beginning for guaranteeing the rights of all nationalities and components in Syria, especially the Kurdish people.”

In a statement on Friday (30 January 2026), Talabani extended his thanks to the United States, France, and the mediating countries, expressing his appreciation for the support of the people of Kurdistan, particularly youth at home and in the diaspora.

He also specifically mentioned the Commander-in-Chief of the SDF, Mazloum Abdi, praising “his efforts and struggle for the people of Rojava.”

The agreement comes after weeks of military confrontations, as the SDF and the Syrian government announced that they had reached a “comprehensive agreement” to ceasefire, which includes the gradual integration of forces and institutions.

The U.S. website Al-Monitor reported that Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani played a “decisive and central” role in bringing the parties’ positions closer together.

Journalist and analyst Amberin Zaman also pointed to this role, considering that the signing of the agreement deserves “great praise” for Nechirvan Barzani, Mazloum Abdi, and Senator Lindsey Graham.

A report written by Amberin Zaman revealed that Nechirvan Barzani contacted Franklin Graham, president of the Billy Graham Foundation and one of the most influential religious figures in the United States.

As a result of this call, Graham sent a message to U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to take the necessary measures to prevent the “genocide” of the Kurdish people. Trump responded to the message by writing: “It’s done. Donald.”
