UN Secretary-General António Guterres held a meeting yesterday, Sunday, at the Sheraton Hotel in Damascus with representatives of 18 Syrian women's organizations, where he discussed women’s conditions, the economic reality, justice issues, and developments in several Syrian regions.
Roken Ahmed, a member of the Relations and Democratic Politics Agreements Committee at the Kongra Star conference, participated in the meeting representing the organization.
According to information provided by Roken Ahmed, the 18 women’s organizations had organized themselves beforehand into three groups and held a series of online meetings to discuss the situation in Syria, before drafting three memorandums that were presented and discussed during the meeting.
The memorandums addressed women's conditions, economic reality, the issue of justice, and social conditions in Syria. One memorandum highlighted the violations and measures taken against the residents of the Sheikh Maqsood and Ashrafieh neighborhoods in Aleppo, as well as the coastal region and Suwayda, emphasizing the need to protect Kurdish rights and remove the effects of the Arab Belt policies.
During the meeting, Guterres affirmed that he would pay close attention to the demands outlined in the memorandums, noting that the UN is aware of the limited participation of women in Syria’s interim government and that this issue is up for discussion with the government.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Kongra Star handed a special memorandum directly to the UN Secretary-General.
