Foza Yusuf, a member of the Presidium of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), has criticized the mechanism for selecting Kurdish representatives in the Syrian Parliament, asserting that the process was conducted through pre-arranged appointments rather than the popular will.
In a post on the X platform, Yusuf stated: “The individuals representing the Kurdish people in the Syrian Parliament were appointed in advance; the ballot box was merely a camouflage for these appointments.” She further noted that this reflects a continued policy of excluding the will of the Kurdish people.
Yusuf’s remarks coincided with the commencement of voting by previously formed electoral colleges to select members of the People’s Assembly in the cities of Hasakah, Qamishlo, and Kobani. The Higher Committee for the People’s Assembly Elections designated the meeting hall in the Hasakah Governorate Administration building as the polling center for the Hasakah constituency. The Old Cultural Center next to the Engineers Syndicate was allocated as the polling center for Qamishlo, while the Cultural Center in Kobani served as the center for that city’s electoral district.
According to the schedule, nine members are to be elected in Hasakah Governorate out of a total of 15 seats. Ahmed al-Sharaa, the head of the interim authority in Syria, is set to appoint five members, while one member representing the city of Ras al-Ayn (Sere Kaniye) was elected previously.
Data from the Higher Committee for the People’s Assembly Elections indicated that:
Kobani District: 12 candidates competed for two seats within an electoral college of 100 members.
Hasakah District: 13 candidates competed for three seats among 150 electoral college members.
Qamishlo District: 7 candidates competed for four seats within an electoral college of 198 members.
Derik District: The results were decided in advance after only two candidates ran for the two allocated seats out of an electoral college of 100 members.
The Higher Committee announced that candidates Farhad Anwar Shahin and Shuwakh Ibrahim al-Assaf won seats for the Ayn al-Arab/Kobani district. In Hasakah, the winners were Ibrahim Mustafa al-Ali, Omar Issa Hayis, and Fasla Yusuf. In Qamishlo, the winning candidates were Radwan Sido, Abdulhalim al-Ali, Kim Ibrahim, and Mahmoud al-Madi.
Earlier, several Kurdish political parties and movements issued a joint statement condemning what they described as an attempt to reproduce policies of marginalization and exclusion against Kurds through the current mechanism of forming the Syrian People’s Assembly. The statement argued that allocating only four seats to Kurds out of 210 total seats represents a “flagrant circumvention” of demographic and political realities.
