statement issued by the journalists’ families “Eva Maria Michelmann, Ahmet Polad” and their legal representatives announced that German journalist Eva Maria Michelmann is free and has returned to Germany after 152 days of detention in Syria, noting that the case of Kurdish journalist Ahmet Polad remains ongoing, amid the continuous absence of any clear information regarding his fate.
The statement explained that Ahmet Polad, also known as Mehmet Nizam Aslan, was detained alongside Eva Maria Michelmann on January 18, 2026, while conducting their journalistic work in the city of Raqqa, emphasizing that the release of the German journalist must be followed by the immediate release of her detained colleague.
The statement stressed that the continued detention of Ahmet Polad and the deprivation of his family and lawyers from knowing his status or communicating with him raise grave concerns regarding his safety and the conditions of his detention, calling upon the relevant authorities to disclose his fate and release him without delay.
The statement added that the journalists’ families and their legal representatives will continue to demand political and legal action until the freedom of Ahmet Polad is secured, reaffirming that press freedom and the protection of journalists must be respected in accordance with international standards and obligations.
