Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani on Wednesday congratulated the people of Kurdistan, the Parliament Presidium, and political forces on the resumption of parliament’s work following an almost two-year hiatus since the parliamentary elections held in October 2024. He also called on political parties that did not participate in the parliament’s reactivation to join its work and attend upcoming sessions.
In a message released on the occasion of the legislative institution’s resumption, obtained by Shafaq News Agency, Barzani congratulated the people of Kurdistan, the Parliament Presidium, and all political parties. He expressed appreciation to the parliamentarians who contributed to reactivating the constitutional institution and fulfilled their legal and national responsibilities.
He added that resuming parliament’s work represents a step toward protecting the Kurdistan Region and strengthening its institutions, emphasizing that this move does not target any individual or political party, but rather serves the supreme interests of the people of Kurdistan and the Region’s political process.
Barzani urged the political parties that did not take part in reactivating parliament to join its work, participate in its upcoming sessions, and work together to serve the people of Kurdistan, support the political process, and contribute to completing its subsequent steps.
He stressed that the upcoming phase requires the cooperation and combined efforts of various political forces to serve the public interest of the Region.
For his part, the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, welcomed on Wednesday the reactivation of the Region’s parliament, calling on all political forces to actively participate in its work and resolve their disputes under its dome.
In a statement, Barzani said: “The Kurdistan Parliament is the supreme institution representing the will of all the people of Kurdistan. It is essential that all political forces actively participate in it and work in a spirit of national responsibility to address their disputes and differences through it.”
He expressed hope that “this step will contribute to overcoming the political deadlock, creating a better ground for understanding, and enhancing cooperation among all political parties.”
The Region’s President reiterated that “dialogue, consensus, and partnership among all political forces form the foundation for overcoming differences and facing challenges,” stressing that “achieving political stability and protecting the Kurdistan Region’s institutions is a shared responsibility falling upon everyone.”
The Kurdistan Region Parliament had resumed its work on Wednesday after a nearly two-year pause following the parliamentary elections held on October 20, 2024, amid political disputes among the main forces over completing parliamentary procedures and forming the new government.
