Sources: The appointments come as part of arrangements to integrate security and military institutions in northeastern Syria
The Syrian authorities have appointed three former leaders of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to security positions in Al-Hasakah Governorate, as part of ongoing arrangements to integrate security and military institutions in northeastern Syria into state institutions, according to security sources in Al-Hasakah and sources close to the SDF who spoke to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.
According to the sources, Malik Bashar, known as “Haval Damhat,” has been appointed as Head of General Intelligence in Al-Hasakah, while Kawa Dirik has been assigned responsibility for military security in the governorate, and Djuwar Amuda has taken charge of the counter-terrorism file within the General Intelligence apparatus, rather than heading the agency.
Damhat’s name emerged following circulated reports about a meeting that brought him together with the Head of Syrian General Intelligence, Abdul Qadir Al-Tahan, in the city of Qamishli. According to the information, he had previously assumed the leadership of the intelligence apparatus in northeastern Syria in 2022, after working in military and security fields within institutions affiliated with the Autonomous Administration.
These appointments follow a visit by a Syrian security delegation to Al-Hasakah on October 7, headed by Abdul Qadir Al-Tahan and accompanied by Abdul Rahman Al-Dabbagh, an official of one of the agency’s departments and Head of Foreign Intelligence. The visit aimed to discuss arrangements for taking over security branches and prisons in the governorate from the HAT forces affiliated with the SDF—which announced its dissolution and integration—alongside discussing the administration of the Al-Roj camp in the rural area of Al-Malikiyah, according to the Syrian newspaper Al-Watan.
