Kurdistan is distinguished by its beautiful nature and natural diversity, from green mountains and valleys to plains and water sources, in addition to the variety of flora and fauna inhabiting it. This wealth is not merely a beautiful sight, but an integral part of Kurdistan’s nature, identity, and future. However, preserving it has become imperative, especially with the growing impacts of climate change and human activities threatening the environment.

In this context, the Kurdistan Biodiversity Project, executed by the Kurdistan Foundation through the (Climate.KRD) platform, aims to collect information on the region’s natural resources and assist in their protection. The significance of this project lies in the fact that many plant and animal species, as well as their areas of distribution, still require further research and scientific documentation.

The foundation launched a dedicated website for the project at (www.biodiversity.krd) to serve as a reference point for information on biodiversity in Kurdistan. The site consolidates data in one place, enabling researchers, interested individuals, and citizens to access it and learn about the living species and their distribution areas.

According to the information published on the platform, 2,252 species of living organisms have been documented so far, including 1,408 plant species and 844 animal species. Additionally, 19 key biodiversity areas have been identified across the governorates of the Kurdistan Region.

The database is available in Kurdish, Arabic, and English, allowing universities, researchers, and students to utilize it for their studies and research, alongside anyone passionate about the environment and nature conservation.

The importance of the project is not limited to recording the number of species present in Kurdistan; it also encompasses identifying their habitats, distribution patterns, and the conditions that enable their survival. Such information can assist specialists in identifying areas requiring greater protection and formulating plans grounded in scientific data rather than relying on limited information.

One of the vital aspects of this project is the ability of citizens to participate in gathering information by sharing photos and data regarding the plants and animals they observe. Public participation in such initiatives helps enhance knowledge of local nature and fosters a sense of responsibility toward it. Environmental protection should not be confined to specialized institutions and researchers, but also demands the attention and engagement of the community.

Nevertheless, documenting living organisms represents only the first step. Preserving biodiversity requires protecting natural habitats, curbing pollution, and addressing the factors that threaten certain species with extinction. This effort demands continuous monitoring and collaboration among scientific institutions, governmental entities, and society.

Hence, the Kurdistan Biodiversity Project can establish a crucial foundation for advancing environmental research and raising awareness about the significance of natural assets. Knowing the region’s flora and fauna and pinpointing areas that require special attention aids in making better decisions to protect this natural heritage.

Kurdistan is rich in its natural diversity, not just in its economic resources. Mountains, valleys, and plains harbor diverse forms of life, and preserving them is a responsibility that extends beyond the present to future generations. Through documentation, research, and awareness initiatives, practical steps can be taken to ensure the preservation of this diversity and shield it from impending threats.
