Kobani Autonomous Administration Issues Urgent Appeal as Humanitarian Conditions Deteriorate Amid Mass Displacement

The Autonomous Democratic Administration in the city of Kobani has warned of a severe deterioration in humanitarian conditions, amid an unprecedented wave of displacement affecting the city and its surrounding rural areas, following recent military developments and the expansion of attacks into nearby villages.

In an official statement, the administration reported that thousands of families have been forced to flee from villages and rural areas toward the city center of Kobani due to escalating hostilities, exacerbating civilian suffering under extremely difficult humanitarian conditions.

The statement noted that displaced families have been sheltered in private homes, public institutions, schools, kindergartens, and buildings unfit for habitation, further deepening their hardship, particularly as water, electricity, telecommunications, and internet services have been cut off across the city and its countryside as a result of ongoing attacks.

According to the statement, the Office of Organization Affairs and the Social Affairs and Workers’ Authority in Kobani, acting on their humanitarian responsibilities, issued an urgent appeal to international and humanitarian organizations to intervene immediately and respond to the growing needs of the displaced population.

In response, several humanitarian organizations — including UNICEF, YNHSAR, DWFPY, UNPFE, War Child, Bahar Organization, Solidarity, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, and the International Committee of the Red Cross — dispatched a humanitarian aid convoy from Aleppo to Kobani. Distribution of assistance to displaced families has begun in coordination with relevant local authorities and remains ongoing.

The administration stressed that the aid delivered so far falls far short of actual needs, given the continuous increase in the number of displaced persons and the worsening of their living conditions. It also warned against attempts by certain parties to falsely claim credit for the assistance, emphasizing that the organizations that provided the aid are well known and directly oversee its distribution.

The statement further called on international powers and humanitarian and human rights organizations to take urgent action to halt attacks on the city of Kobani and its countryside, to deliver additional humanitarian assistance, and to visit the area to directly assess the humanitarian situation. It held international silence responsible for the worsening suffering of civilians.

This appeal comes amid a large-scale military campaign conducted by the Syrian Arab Army and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, targeting predominantly Kurdish areas. According to human rights organizations, the campaign has resulted in the deaths of thousands of Kurdish civilians and fighters, as well as arbitrary arrests and other serious violations, amid near-total media blackout and the absence of independent and effective mechanisms for investigation and accountability.
