New Director of Kobani District Assumes Office, Pledges Public Service Following Administrative Building Opening

KOBANI – Legal expert Mohammad Mustafa Mohammad has officially assumed his duties as the Director of the Kobani District (the center of the Kobani region). This step coincides with the inauguration of the district administrative building in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, attended by official figures and local notables, aiming to enhance services and improve the living conditions in the area, according to a report by Al-Ikhbariya Syria.

The Kobani region and its countryside comprise four districts: Kobani District (the regional center), Al-Jalabiyya, Al-Shuyukh, and Sarrin.

While Mohammad Mustafa Mohammad received his commission several days ago, he officially announced the commencement of his work today from within the city. In a formal statement, he pledged to provide services to all citizens and to operate with integrity and justice.

The Director stated in his address:

“The city of Kobani and its countryside endured long years of suffering under the Ba’athist regime, where various forms of injustice were entrenched—ranging from the general oppression affecting all Syrians to the ethnic discrimination targeting the Kurdish people. Despite this, Kobani did not submit to this reality; it rose against the regime on March 14, 2004, and actively participated in the March 2011 protests as part of the movement for freedom and dignity.

During the years of war, Kobani suffered immense losses, particularly during the ISIS attacks on September 15, 2014, which led to the total displacement of its population and the destruction of nearly half the city, while the remaining part sustained severe damage. On June 25, 2015, the city witnessed a bloody massacre that resulted in hundreds of casualties—both martyrs and wounded—in addition to hundreds of missing persons whose fates remain unknown to this day.

With the transformations the country witnessed on January 8, 2024, a new phase has emerged, one upon which we rely to build a different Syria based on partnership between all its components. In this context, we affirm our openness to cooperating with relevant authorities to launch the reconstruction process and provide services based on justice and equality, in a manner that bolsters stability and serves all citizens without exception.”
