Swedish Delegation Visits the Department of External Relations in Qamishli, Affirms Support for the Autonomous Administration

The Department of External Relations of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria announced in a statement that it received a political delegation from the Kingdom of Sweden yesterday evening at its headquarters in the city of Qamishli. The delegation included Jonas Sjöstedt, Member of the European Parliament representing the Swedish Left Party, and Yekbun Alp, member of the party’s executive leadership and head of its foreign relations office.

According to the statement, the delegation was received by Ilham Ahmed, Co-Chair of the Department of External Relations, her deputy Gulistan Ali, and Dr. Abdulkarim Omar, representative of the Autonomous Administration in Damascus.

The statement explained that during the meeting, Ilham Ahmed presented a comprehensive overview of the overall situation in Syria, particularly in areas under the Autonomous Administration. She addressed the attacks that the region has been subjected to, beginning with the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods and extending to areas east of the Euphrates, as well as the violations that accompanied them. She also discussed the agreement concluded between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the transitional government in Damascus on January 18–29, emphasizing the need for the full implementation of its provisions.

The statement added that the meeting also addressed the humanitarian situation in the city of Kobani amid the imposed siege, which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of civilians being deprived of water, electricity, and telecommunications services, in addition to a severe shortage of basic and essential supplies.

For their part, members of the Swedish delegation stated, according to the statement, that their visit comes at a sensitive stage to follow developments on the ground and to directly assess the conditions of tens of thousands of people forcibly displaced to the Jazira region and their humanitarian circumstances. They expressed their support for the Kurdish people and the Autonomous Administration, affirming their determination to convey the suffering of the region’s residents to the European Parliament and the international community.

The statement noted that the meeting comes within the framework of the ongoing diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Autonomous Administration to enhance communication with international actors and to shed light on the political and humanitarian developments in the region.
