Syrian Kurdish powerlifting athlete Mirgan Haji, a native of the city of Kobani, achieved a notable feat at the World Powerlifting Championships held in Sun City, South Africa, winning three gold medals and one silver medal.
Haji won gold medals in the deadlift, squat, and overall categories yesterday, Tuesday, while she took the silver medal in the bench press, in a performance that strengthened her presence on the international stage.
Mirgan Haji is originally from the city of Kobani and lives with her family in the city of Raqqa. Her name has emerged in powerlifting in recent years after achieving strong results in local and regional competitions.
In 2025, Haji had also achieved a notable accomplishment at the West Asia Powerlifting Championships held in Doha, the capital of Qatar, where she won four gold medals in the 63-kilogram weight category, including the squat, bench press, deadlift, and overall competitions, in addition to setting records in her category.
The achievement in South Africa adds to the Syrian athlete’s record. She began her career in weightlifting at an early age before establishing herself in local competitions and later winning the Syrian championship, going on to compete at both the regional and international levels.
This achievement reflects the growing presence of Syrian women athletes in international competitions and also highlights female talent from northeastern Syria, despite the challenges facing individual sports, including limited resources and equipment as well as difficulties in participating in competitions abroad.
