Two Kurdish citizens, Waiso Saleh Al-Houshan and Muhammad Ismail Qader, originally from the countryside of Kobani, were abducted while at their work site on a drilling rig between the Manajir and Sere Kaniye / Ras al-Ayn areas in the Hasakah countryside on July 15, 2026, following an attack by an armed group consisting of about seven people.
According to information, the gunmen took the two citizens at gunpoint, forced them into a vehicle, and transported them to an unknown destination before communication with them was lost.
The family of Waiso Saleh Al-Houshan, who originates from the village of Hamamak, stated that their son was kidnapped alongside citizen Muhammad Ismail Qader, confirming that their fate remains unknown to date.
The family added that they received a phone call from the kidnappers during which they were able to speak with the abductees. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of $600,000 USD in exchange for their release and gave the family a deadline of no more than 24 hours, threatening dire consequences if the amount is not paid.
The family stressed that their financial circumstances do not allow them to secure this large sum, appealing to the relevant authorities and human rights and humanitarian organizations to intervene and work to ensure the release of the abductees.
According to reported information, this incident comes as part of a series of kidnappings targeting Kurdish citizens in the region for financial extortion, at a time when reports indicate the continued prevention of a number of Kurdish residents in Sere Kaniye from returning to their homes and lands, along with the ongoing seizure of those properties by members of Turkish-backed armed Syrian factions.
