Rural Tal Abyad/Girê Spî – A Kurdish family was subjected to an armed assault while attempting to inspect its agricultural land in the village of Bir Tamah in the western countryside of Girê Spî (Tal Abyad) in Rojava Kurdistan. The family was surprised by the presence of armed groups from the neighboring village of Mneif, who had seized the land and were cultivating it for their own benefit, according to local sources.
The sources stated that the family members tried to inquire about the status of their land and demand their rights, but the armed groups attacked them directly before forcing them at gunpoint to leave the area and stay away from their property.
According to local information, members of the family were beaten, resulting in injuries among them, while the gunmen directed nationalist and regionalist insults at them during the assault.
The sources added that the family was also threatened with death before its members were expelled by force of arms and barred from accessing their agricultural land.
In the same context, local sources reported that the lands belonging to Kurdish families had been plowed by a family known as the “Abu Raad group,” hailing from the village of Mneif.
The sources said that most members of this family belong to the factions of the Turkish-backed “Syrian National Army,” which operates under the Syrian Ministry of Defense.
According to sources, the incident comes in the context of repeated violations in the rural areas of Girê Spî (Tal Abyad) involving the infringement upon and seizure of property and land belonging to displaced Kurdish citizens, depriving the original owners of access to their lands and livelihoods.
Previous human rights reports indicate that the Turkish military operation launched in October 2019, along with the control established by Turkish forces and their backed “Syrian National Army” factions over the area extending between Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ayn (Serê Kaniyê), led to widespread displacement of the population.
