The American news website Axios reported that U.S. President Donald Trump held phone calls with President Masoud Barzani and Bafel Talabani.
According to Axios, “the purpose of these calls was to discuss the potential joint war between the United States and Israel against Iran and the future steps in this conflict.”
The website cited three informed sources as saying that “these contacts took place just one day after the start of the intensive U.S. bombing campaign on Iran.”
One source described the content of the conversations as “sensitive,” declining to provide further details.
Responding to a question about the calls, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said: “President Trump has been in contact with many allies and partners in the region over the past few days.”
According to the report, “the Kurds possess thousands of trained soldiers along the Iraqi-Iranian border and control strategic areas that could play a major role should the war escalate.”
Axios added: “The Kurds in Iraq have deep ties with the Kurdish minority inside Iran, which is considered a point of strength for the United States and Israel.”
A source told Axios: “President Trump speaks with everyone, whether Kurdish leaders or also Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.”
