The family of Hassan Arafat Kalash—director of a language institute and a philosophy teacher in the city of Girkê Legê in Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan)—identified on Saturday, October 10, 2026, his body, which had been found burned on October 2 on the unpaved Dardara road in the Tel Kochar district, prior to his burial in his native village of Sikirka Jouli.
Kalash’s body had been discovered in the countryside of Tel Kochar days after his abduction, confirming that it belonged to teacher Hassan Kalash, who was kidnapped on September 30 from the market in Girkê Legê.
On October 11, the Kurdistan Region Leadership Office of the Kurdistan Democratic Party – Syria (KDP-S), representatives of the Kurdistan National Council (ENKS) parties, popular delegations, and the Kurdistan – Syria Martyrs Foundation participated in the first day of the condolence gathering for the educator martyr Hassan Kalash. The ceremony was held at the party’s office in Domeez, Duhok Governorate, Kurdistan Region, following an atrocious crime of kidnapping and murder.
The KDP-S office in Domeez hosted the condolence service for the educator martyr Hassan Kalash, a philosophy teacher, in a atmosphere described as embodying unity of stance and the profoundness of the grief.
On October 5, prior to the discovery of his body, the Central Committee of the Kurdistan Democratic Party – Syria had issued a statement regarding the kidnapping of Hassan Arafat Kalash, a member of the party’s local council in Girkê Legê.
The committee stated that Kalash, born in 1970, was “a member of the local council of our party (Kurdistan Democratic Party – Syria) and an esteemed philosophy teacher.” It noted that on Wednesday, September 30, at 10:00 PM, he was subjected to a terrorist kidnapping in Girkê Legê by unidentified individuals who took him to an unknown destination, stressing that “to date, no party has claimed responsibility for this abduction.”
The committee emphasized that “such terrorist practices, in these sensitive and critical circumstances facing Syria and the region, represent a blatant threat to the security and stability of citizens, as well as to the security of the entire region, evoking deep concern and outrage.”
The committee held Syrian authorities, particularly local ones, “fully responsible for this disgraceful act of terrorism and what happened to Comrade Hassan,” demanding that security forces and relevant authorities “fulfill their duties and responsibilities by investigating the incident to reveal its details, arresting the kidnapping criminals, and subjecting them to the harshest measures to serve as a deterrent to others.”
Furthermore, it called on political forces, human rights committees, civil society organizations, and all relevant entities to “intervene immediately and exert pressure on the authorities to carry out their role in this regard, securing the immediate release of Comrade Hassan Kalash and returning him to his family, relatives, and his humanitarian work as an educator and teacher.”
The committee warned that “any delay by the responsible authorities only increases concern and tension regarding the life of the abductee, fueling motives for protest among his family, comrades, and the public throughout the region.”
