Multiple sources reported that the Jordanian authorities detained Kurdish Sheikh Murshid Mashouq Al-Khaznawi at Amman International Airport, allegedly at the request of the Syrian interim authorities, in order to prevent him from participating in the planned Kurdish mass rally on Thursday, May 14, commemorating Kurdish Language Day, observed annually on May 15.
In the same context, the administration of the Democratic Islamic Conference in Rojava announced that contact with Sheikh Al-Khaznawi had been lost since the evening of Tuesday, May 12, raising concerns among his supporters and followers of Kurdish affairs.
For his part, Sheikh Murshid Al-Khaznawi posted a statement on his Facebook page, saying that “routine procedures at the airport prevented me from participating in the Kurdish Language Day program in Qamishlo. I am well and in good condition,” stressing that his position remains “firm” and that his struggle for “the rights of the Kurdish people” will continue despite the circumstances.
Sheikh Murshid Al-Khaznawi is considered one of the most prominent Kurdish religious figures in Syria and is widely known for his moderate national and religious discourse within Kurdish circles.
Sheikh Murshid is also the son of Sheikh Mohammad Mashouq Ezzedine Al-Khaznawi, known as the “Sheikh of Martyrs,” who was killed in 2005 after being abducted in Damascus by the security forces of the Assad regime.
