Nechirvan Barzani discusses the situation of Kurds in Syria and strengthening coordination to maintain security and stability with Mazloum Abdi and Tom Barrack

Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, discussed during separate and joint meetings held today, Tuesday (16 June 2026), with Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and Tom Barrack, the US President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy for Iraq and Syria, the latest political and security developments in Syria and the region, the situation of the Kurds and Syria’s components, and ways to enhance cooperation and coordination to maintain security and stability.

A statement issued by the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region said that President Nechirvan Barzani met in the evening with Mazloum Abdi, during which both sides discussed political and security developments in Syria and the region, the situation of the Kurds and other components there, efforts to resolve problems, promote understanding among Kurdish parties, and enhance coordination and cooperation between them and Damascus.

The statement added that both sides stressed the importance of continuing dialogue, preserving stability, and achieving peace in the region. Discussions on ways to confront terrorism and strengthen coordination to maintain security also constituted another key focus of the meeting.

In another meeting held in the afternoon, President Nechirvan Barzani met with Tom Barrack and Mazloum Abdi, where the participants discussed the latest political and security developments in the region, the situation in Syria, and cooperation between the Kurds and Damascus.

The Presidency of the Kurdistan Region’s statement noted that the US President’s Special Envoy reaffirmed his country’s continued support for protecting security and stability and finding appropriate solutions to the problems in Syria.

For his part, Barzani stressed that dialogue and understanding among the parties, as well as protecting the rights of the Kurds and Syria’s components, are the path to resolving problems. He also expressed the Kurdistan Region’s full cooperation and support for resolving problems and preserving security and stability.

The statement emphasized that discussing ways to enhance cooperation and joint coordination in confronting the threats of terrorism and achieving lasting security and stability in the region was another key aspect of the meeting.
