The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, stated that the region has been subjected to more than a thousand missile and drone attacks, noting that these attacks came directly from Iran or were executed from within Iraq by certain militias.
Since the beginning of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran on February 28, Iran and loyalist Iraqi factions have targeted sites in the Kurdistan Region.
In a statement to Al Jazeera, Barzani affirmed the region’s support for the Iraqi government’s efforts to restrict arms to state forces, emphasizing that the region does not wish to be a party to any conflict taking place in the region.
Barzani stated that no party has exerted pressure on the regional government to engage in the war, explaining that the priority is to protect the Kurdistan Region and keep it away from conflicts.
Barzani denied the existence of relations between the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and Israel, emphasizing that the management of foreign policy falls under the jurisdiction of the federal government.
He also denied the presence of U.S. soldiers at the Harir Air Base, stating that the base has not seen a U.S. troop presence for 10 years.
Regarding the region’s relations with neighboring countries, Barzani stated that relations with Syria are good and developing, while describing relations with Turkey as “very good” and experiencing growing cooperation.
The President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Nechirvan Barzani, visited Syria last week and held talks with President Ahmed Al-Sharaa regarding bilateral relations and ways to enhance cooperation and coordination, alongside developments in the region and several issues of mutual interest.
