The Counter-Terrorism Directorate in the Kurdistan Region on Saturday called on residents across various areas and cities of the region to take shelter in safe places immediately when warning sirens sound, as the international coalition’s air defense systems respond to missile attacks in the skies over Erbil.
In a statement, the directorate said: “We ask citizens to take shelter in appropriate locations when warning sirens are sounded, in order to avoid injuries and unwanted incidents during the response of the defense system, as fragments from destroyed objects have fallen in several locations.”
Earlier, the Counter-Terrorism Directorate in the Kurdistan Region announced that international coalition forces led by the United States had shot down missiles and drones believed to be Iranian.
In another statement, the directorate said: “Coalition forces managed to intercept and shoot down a number of missiles and explosive-laden drones in the airspace of Erbil province, without recording any significant human or material losses.”
The international coalition base at Erbil International Airport came under several drone attacks on Saturday.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday, February 28, 2026, that the United States had begun carrying out “major combat operations” inside Iran, in conjunction with a large-scale attack launched by United States and Israel after weeks of U.S. threats of military action and the mobilization of forces in the Middle East.
