Relations between Israel and Turkey have witnessed a significant escalation following a sharp exchange of accusations between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The confrontation stems from Turkish judicial investigations regarding the “Freedom Flotilla” incident bound for Gaza.
Netanyahu fiercely attacked Erdogan, accusing him of “committing massacres against his Kurdish citizens.” In a post on his “X” platform account, Netanyahu stated:
“Under my leadership, Israel will continue to fight the Iranian terrorist regime and its proxies, unlike Erdogan, who supports them and even commits massacres against his Kurdish citizens.”
Netanyahu’s remarks came after the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment against 35 Israeli officials, including Netanyahu, following the Israeli Navy’s intervention against the “Freedom Flotilla” vessels in international waters last October.
According to the investigation conducted by the Terrorism Crimes Bureau of the Turkish Prosecutor’s Office, vessels belonging to a civil maritime organization, which aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, were subjected to armed intervention by Israeli security personnel while sailing in international waters. In this context, arrest warrants were issued for the suspects after their roles in planning and execution were identified.
The indictment includes charges such as “crimes against humanity,” “genocide,” “deprivation of liberty,” and “torture,” in addition to “damage to property” and “aggravated looting.” The prosecution is seeking aggravated life sentences, with potential penalties totaling up to 4,596 years.
The indictment further asserted that attacks against civilians, the destruction of livelihoods, and the prevention of humanitarian aid “cannot be evaluated merely as security measures,” but are instead linked to acts constituting genocide and crimes against humanity under international criminal law.
In the same context, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir directed a direct insult at Erdogan, writing on the “X” platform:
“Erdogan, do you understand English?” before adding a profanity in English: “Fuck You.”

In response, the Turkish Presidency issued a strongly worded statement describing Netanyahu as someone who is “committing genocide in Gaza and attacking seven countries in the region,” considering that he “dares, in a state of desperation, to target President Erdogan.”
The statement added that Netanyahu is a “criminal against whom arrest warrants have been issued” and that he is pushing the region toward chaos and conflict to maintain his political survival, emphasizing that he “will be held accountable sooner or later for the crimes he has committed against humanity.”
For its part, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement describing Netanyahu as the “Hitler of our era because of his crimes.” It pointed out that an arrest warrant has been issued against him by the International Criminal Court on charges of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, while noting that Israel, under his leadership, faces accusations of genocide before the International Court of Justice.
