Syrian Observatory for Human Rights: The attacks coincided with the submission of property and land ownership documents, amid threats and fears for the safety of returnees and their belongings.

Fears have renewed regarding the safety of displaced Kurds wishing to return to their areas of origin in northern Syria, following an attack on a group of them in the city of Tal Abyad/Girê Spî, alongside the smashing of their cars, as they attempted to reclaim the homes from which they had been displaced.

According to activists from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, dozens of displaced Kurds arrived at the Tal Abyad/Girê Spî district administration building to submit official documents proving their ownership of lands and real estate in the city and its countryside, in preparation to reclaim them and return to their original areas after years of displacement.

These developments come amid a near-total absence of security intervention to contain the tension and halt the attacks, raising serious concerns over the safety of civilians and their property at a time when the displaced are seeking to restore their rights and return to their home regions after years of displacement and exile.

The incident falls within the context of the return of displaced persons to Tal Abyad/Girê Spî and its countryside, an issue that continues to face challenges related to property restitution and ensuring a safe return. Operation “Peace Spring,” launched by Turkey in the region in 2019, led to the displacement of thousands of Kurdish residents from their homes, while human rights organizations have documented violations affecting housing, land, and property rights in those areas.
