Kurdistan Region President affirms support for a stable and united Syria, while al-Sharaa looks forward to continued cooperation and stronger good-neighborly relations
Damascus – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said, following his arrival in Damascus and meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, that Syria stands before "a historic opportunity for recovery, reconstruction, and prosperity" after years of suffering, stressing the importance of preserving the country's stability, unity, and the rights of all its communities.
In a post on X, Barzani said he had expressed during the meeting his confidence in President al-Sharaa's vision and his belief that Syria, under his leadership, is capable of moving toward greater stability, prosperity, and a brighter future for all its people.
Barzani also reaffirmed his support for a "stable and united Syria" in which the rights of all ethnic and religious components are protected, highlighting the country's important role in promoting peace, security, and stability across the region.
He further pointed to the shared interests linking Syria, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region by virtue of geography, emphasizing the significant opportunities to expand economic cooperation in ways that serve the mutual interests of their peoples.
For his part, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said in a post on X that he had welcomed in Damascus "my dear brother, Mr. Nechirvan Barzani," President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, noting that their meeting focused on bilateral relations and ways to strengthen cooperation in support of stability and the interests of both peoples.
Al-Sharaa added: "We appreciate what the Kurdistan Region has provided over the past years in hosting and caring for our people, and we look forward to continuing our joint work in a spirit of cooperation and brotherhood that strengthens good-neighborly relations."
