The third convoy of displaced Kurdish residents from Afrin departed from the city of Qamishlo today, Tuesday, April 14, 2026. This move comes as part of the implementation of the agreement between the Syrian Interim Government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), under the supervision of the Presidential Team tasked with overseeing this file.
Ahmed al-Hilali, spokesperson for the Presidential Team, stated: “Within the framework of the ongoing efforts led by the Presidential Team to address the issue of displacement and return, a new return convoy for the people of the Afrin region—displaced within Al-Hasakah Governorate—departed this morning under the direct supervision of the team, heading toward their villages and towns.”
Al-Hilali explained that the convoy “comprises approximately 800 families, marking the largest organized return operation to date. This reflects tangible progress in preparing the necessary field and service conditions for the residents’ return to their areas and underscores the State’s seriousness regarding this humanitarian and national file.”
The first batch of displaced Kurdish residents from Afrin returned on March 9, consisting of 400 families, while the second batch, composed of 200 families, returned on April 4.
On April 4, 2026, the city of Afrin witnessed recorded provocations and assaults during the reception of the second convoy of displaced persons. Groups of settlers provoked Kurdish residents in the vicinity of the Al-Qaws area, Mazot Street, and near the Helmet Roundabout while they were gathered to welcome the convoy.
According to local reports, these groups chanted racist and jihadist slogans and played music described as provocative. They also engaged in physical altercations with Kurdish citizens by pushing them and raised portraits of Saddam Hussein.
